TWO VISIONS OF AMERICA; WHERE WILL OUR FUTURE LEAD?

As we are in the week following the 4th of July and our 249th Birthday as a nation it might be appropriate to look at what is America? I have heard it said unlike the other nations of the earth the United States of America is an idea and not a specific demographic of people. There is some truth to this but there is also a culture and a history attached to America with roots that unite us all to our common heritage in classical Greece and Rome. The idea, history, and the culture cannot be separated without losing the vision of America the founders had.

There is the story of the Czechoslovakian father who told his family they were going to flee communism and escape to America (my family and my church when I was growing up facilitated Czech communist refugees to adapt to and fit into American culture after their defection and asylum. Such adaptation is not automatic; it is a choice.) His son asked why they have to leave their home family and friends, and the father answered, “Because we were born Americans son. We were just born on the wrong continent.”

I believe that there is definitely a traditional American cultural identity that transcends racial boundaries and that we must cultivate it if we are to remain a nation (let us be clear that there are many many forces that are actively working against the United States remaining a free nation.) But what constitutes these ideas, this liberty, this identity that many cultures and creeds are irrepressably hostile to?.

As I have said, our civilization is not automatic. It must be taught to every immigrant and every person who would be a citizen in our nation. Every generation must relearn what it means to be American. The American ideal can transcend bonds of race, culture, gender, or other aspects but it is not a given. Such ideals need to be educated and formed, or we revert back to our tribal, violent natures as hominid primates. You don’t “get zapped” by the culture fairy just by entering America or by being born here. There are cultures in America that are compatible with American ideals and cultural identity and there are cultures in America that are perpetually hostile to American culture and identity. I believe that this is a choice, you are not born with it. If that’s the case, then citizenship should not be given at birth but only to those who choose to embrace the ideas – as most, but not all, naturalized citizens do. Others can live among us as Free Persons, but they should not be voting citizens. Today there seems to be about half the population in America today that reject the symbols of America, and who denigrate the Constitution, the Declaration, and the Founders of America spitting on the legacy, ideals, and symbols upon which our country was built. It is probably natural that every generation will see a certain number of people that don’t have the character necessary for being a free people and have returned to slavish attitudes and prefer comfortable slavery under a strong central government to dangerous freedom that protects our own borders and ideals.

Jefferson Davis once said that the issues that caused the Civil War were not settled by that war and would resurface in America once more. Today they have – the two conflicting visions of America. Will America be a Jeffersonian Republic or a Mercantile Empire whose power is centralized in New York and Washington? Today there is too much machinery to just flip a switch and go back to a Jeffersonian Republic but if we want our freedom back that is what we must do. Trump wants to bring us back to the 1980s but already in the 1970s when they did a study putting bullets from the declaration into petition form most Americans wouldn’t sign it because it was “too radical.” Jeffersonian America IS radical compared to the financial empire we live in today. The American Experiment was all about people governning themselves, but there have always been powerful people who have never trusted “the people” or what they might call “the ignorant, unwashed, masses.” However, if they are ignorant, it is because centralized government education has made them so. We are not the people of 1776. We probably are not sufficiently moral or educated to fully govern ourselves until the damage of mal education can be repaired but we must repair it.

As a both a soldier and a retired immigration officer I definitely saw evidence for America as an idea. In some ways the American culture transcends other divisive factors by a bonding of ideas and those ideas create a culture and way of life different from all other places on the earth. It can be a reaction to oppression that creates an American response, and it is culturally formed in families and by schools and higher education, or it is formed in military training. But none of these things are automatic. Media, education, families, and religion can aid in the formation of American identity or can undermine it.[See also: Who Stole Your Education? One of the ways the military contributed to this bond was in a saying: “There ain’t no race in the Army, we’re all green and we all bleed red.”

George Washington, required those who had positions of responsibility in the government of these United States to take a loyalty oath not unlike the oath of loyalty those who are naturalized citizens take. The oath includes and included both a declaration of loyalty to American ideals and the renunciation of all foreign allegiance [although based on Ilhan Omar’s statements it appears that she lied when she took this vow and completed her citizenship application.] Naturalized Citizenship also provides that those who take the oath disingenuously or for purpose of evasion can have their citizenship revoked.

What are the ideas that make up America? Well one of the clearest declarations can be found in the Declaration of Independence, the Preamble to the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights of these United States. The Declaration, in particular talks about what we believe and what we will not tolerate.

There are philosophies and beliefs that not only bear an everlasting and unremitting enmity to America, liberty and self-determination but that real Americans should hold an everlasting enmity to the harbingers of tyranny and destroyers of our civilization. Not all ideas are nuetral.

Here is part of what Jefferson wrote for the Declaration of Congress on July 4th 1776:

We hold these truths to be self-evident: [in other words they are buried in our very soul, heart, or subconscious.]

that all men are created equal, [created by a Creator and equal in God’s sight and under law]

that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.– [these are not the only rights but examples]

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, [the purpose of government is to secure our natural rights, and create a safe place to exercise them, all other actionsof government are extra]

deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, [the government serves the people, not the other way around as in other government systems. This was called the American Experiment.]

–That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, [if a government stops protecting the rights of the people or becomes an impediment to their safety, security, and liberty the government can and should be changed. A government is not invioble.]

and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. [again, any new government should return it back to its proper place and duty.]

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. [People are willing to put up with a lot, but everyone has its breaking point. If the government has closed off all avenues for a proper redress of grievances that is why the populace must be armed.]

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.— [if a government becomes evil and tyrannical it is our right and our duty as a free people to revolt, tear it down, and rebuild it in a form that we believe will work better or to return it to its original form.]

These are some of the thoughts of our founding fathers. They define what our government was created to be about and what it is not. They define who we are as a people, and what America is as a nation.

Take this month, the month of the 249th birthday of America to reflect on what America means to you and the world. And where our government has gone and where it should go.
